Part One: Constructed Realities, The Relationship between Tech and Truth 10:00 - 11:20

In this first session we will explore how memories are anchored, how we both engage with and protect ourselves from the world around us, and how technology can affect and reflect different kinds of truth.

Chris Walker, CEO Bright White Ltd & Dr Martin Stern- 'The Relationship Between Truth and Technology'

Chris and Martin share two experiences with recent applications of technology.

One example comes from his work as the producer of technology-enabled experiences. Chris and a team from York worked with the National Holocaust Centre and Museum to create interactive conversations with survivors of the Holocaust. The project involved creating 200 hours of new primary source archive material, accessed through natural language questions from audiences to the survivors.

The other example comes from his research into ‘dark ads’ used in political campaigning. Prompted by the DCMS Committee Disinformation and 'Fake News', Facebook recently released a slew of adverts run by Vote Leave during the 2016 EU Referendum, which provides a unique insight into the machinery of ‘dark advertising’.
